Princess Fiona's parents invite her and Shrek to dinner to celebrate her marriage. If only they knew the newlyweds were both ogres.
Shrek 2 Review
Single-handedly proving that big blockbusters don't have to be brainless, "Shrek 2" is - in short - fabulous. Stuffed to its computer generated seams with even more gags, eye-popping visuals and fantastic performances than the stonkingly good original, the sequel finds everyone's favourite ogre Shrek off on his honeymoon with the love of his life, fellow greenie Princess Fiona. But happily ever after it isn't as the happy couple are soon summoned to the castle of Fiona's parents, the King and Queen of the Kingdom of Far, Far Away, and the in-laws aren't pleased with what they see. So miffed, in fact, is the King with his new relative that he turns to an evil Fairy Godmother and the celebrated ogre assassin Puss In Boots to make sure his family is rid of the farting, belching green monster for good.
And while it takes a little while to get going, this second slice of witty fairy tale fun is just as good, if not better, than the original. Skilfully blending backstory and new characters into the colourful mix, the genii at Dreamworks have crafted 90 minutes of witty, charming and downright brilliant entertainment that's got spectacle in bucketloads for the kids and movie in-jokes and clever gags for the grown-ups. Special mention must go to Antonio Banderas who has far too much fun as the cute but deadly feline killer and a terrific Jennifer Saunders as the enjoyably malevolent fairy godmother. It might not be quite as visually stunning as "Finding Nemo" or as profound as "Toy Story 2," but I'll guarantee that the latest adventure of the ugliest star in cinema will have you cheering in the aisles by the credits.
